More wins

Many of us often don’t continue to move through our careers in exactly the way we started or how we planned.  The work we do can change us and then our plans change. That happened to me too.

I was fascinated by creative marketing, advertising, and iconic brands. My undergraduate degree is in marketing. I saw my future as a brand leader working for a major consumer goods company. I connected product and promotion to levers that made good companies better.  To some extent, that is true.  I went into my MBA program to position myself to grow in product management.

But awareness and insight can lead to a different path.  My insight came with my first real job after college.  I was responsible for leading people, many of them had more tenure with the company than I had in years on earth at that time.  It was an opportunity to see issues with freshness and with little bias.

Over time, I noticed that several team members, even though they had been in their roles for a few years, struggled to consistently do their jobs well. There were disconnects in information and preparation. Imagine what that struggle did to their career dreams, confidence, effectiveness, and even relationships outside of work.  Think about the drain on energy and creativity. That was my tipping point. I began to find my energy in enabling people to perform better so they could make organizations better.

Here's what I believe about people and work...

The overwhelming majority of people approach their professional lives with a deep desire to do good work.  Good work means different things to different people. The common theme is to add some level of value.  That successful investment of time and effort in exchange for both recognition and compensation, is foundational to an individual's identity. An organization's success is, to a large degree, the result of the sum of its wonderful people-parts.
